MICHELE LANDEL: EXPLORING HOLES
Join us as we explore holes, both abstract and real. You will learn about how and why contemporary artists use holes in their artwork and we will have fun making holes together. Then we will discuss as a group how and why we fill holes both in our own lives and through art. You will look at different artistic techniques for filling these small empty spaces (light, layered paper, thread, etc.) and then choose one or two of the techniques to use on the holes that we have already made together.
No experience is needed.
Supplies: drawing paper (250g), tissue paper, postcard or greeting card, wood nail, embroidery needle and thread, sewing needle and thread, incense stick and matches, and small towel. (This could be a kit that is mailed to attendees.)
MICHELE LANDEL: STITCHING ON PAPER
Together we will explore different techniques for sewing on paper. We will begin with hand stitching and progress to free motion machine embroidery. You will learn about the importance of the correct needle and thread for each technique, how to layer colors using thread, tips for working with different weights of paper, and finally how to combine textiles and found materials into your paper-based projects using thread. You will have an opportunity to ask questions that are specific to your ideas or sewing machines.
Beginner to advanced sewing experience recommended.
Supplies: drawing paper (250g), tissue paper, photographs (personal or from a magazine), small scraps of cotton fabric, embroidery needle, embroidery thread, sewing needle, colored thread, sewing machine with a free motion quilter presser foot, topstitch needles, painters tape, glue stick, scissors
***You do not need all these supplies for the workshop but will need them if you want to try and practice all the techniques that will be shown during the workshop.***
